How do I use the full-text search?

Full-Text Search

User and Room Search

With Element Client

In the web browser, the left-hand sidebar provides an overview of Spaces, rooms and people. The search field there can be used to search for Spaces, rooms and people.

With FluffyChat Client

In the web browser, the left-hand sidebar provides an overview of Spaces, chats (= rooms) and users. The search field there can be used to search for Spaces, chats and users.

Note: This search field only searches the names of Spaces, chats and users, not the content of messages. FluffyChat currently does not offer a search across all chats. Messages are searched within one chat at a time (see below).

Searching Messages in a Room

With Element Client

The user is in a room and would like to search the messages. By clicking on the room name or the info icon, the room info is opened. At the top, a search field labelled Search messages is displayed. A search term can be entered there.

Note: Please be aware of encrypted rooms. Encrypted messages are not searched when using the Element Client in the web browser. The search will return no results in that case.

As an alternative, the Element Desktop App can be used. Searching encrypted messages is possible there.

With FluffyChat Client

The user is in a room and would like to search the messages. Click the three-dot menu (top right) in the room and select "Search". Enter the search term in the search bar and confirm with Enter. If there are any matches, the results will be listed under "Messages".

Additionally, the "Gallery" tab shows all images and videos from the room, and the "Files" tab shows all files. These two tabs do not depend on the search term.
The FluffyChat Client allows searching of encrypted messages both in the web browser and with the FluffyChat App on a smartphone.

Note on duration: FluffyChat loads the chat history step by step onto the device and searches it there. This is necessary because encrypted messages can only be read on your own device. Depending on the length of the history, it can therefore take up to half a minute until results appear.

Below the results, you can see up to which date the chat has already been searched (e.g. "Chat searched until 6 Oct"). Older messages are only searched once you click "Search more". If a term is not found, it is worth clicking "Search more" several times.
